Torakusu Yamaha started out building reed organs in 1887 in Hamamatsu, Japan and incorporated as Nippon
Gakki in 1889. In 1899, Yamaha travelled to the United States, researching newer technology to learn piano
building. By 1900 the company produced its first upright piano, being the first piano maker in Japan, and in 1902
its first grand piano. By the 1930s Yamaha expanded its product line, manufacturing other musical instruments,
audio equipment, motorcycles, sporting goods and other consumer products.  They began the export of pianos
to the USA around 1960. Yamaha also made some grand pianos for Story & Clark in the late 1960s to 1970s. In
1973 Yamaha then purchased the Everett Piano Company in South Haven, Michigan. From 1973 to 1986,
Yamaha manufactured a complete line of pianos in Japan, and a completely different line at the Everett factory in
Michigan. They also made a line of pianos bearing the Everett name until 1986. By 1986 Yamaha ceased
production at the Everett factory, moving all U.S. piano manufacturing to Thomaston, Georgia. The Thomaston
plant closed by March 2007. Starting in 2006, Yamaha manufactured the Cable-Nelson line of pianos (a trade
name acquired when they purchased the Everett Piano Co.), made at their factories in China and Indonesia.
Yamaha discontinued the Cable-Nelson line in 2015. In February 2008, Yamaha purchased all shares of Austrian
firm, Bösendorfer. Besides its production in Japan, Yamaha now has manufacturing plants all over the world,
including: China, Mexico, and Indonesia. In 2009, Yamaha shut down their factories in Taiwan and England (with
Kemble). Models that were built in those facilities were then being made in Yamaha's other factories in Asia.
